Updates, part 3 - Word Count Edition

Hey, yall!

This is going to be a quick update and a confession.

First, the confession. I’m a sucker for a good story. In the past week, there have been some great submissions, and at least three of those stories exceeded the word count I asked for. Now, each one of those submissions were so well written, and were such good stories, that I felt like I would be a fool to pass up on them.

Those stories made me start to question my word count. I don’t want to make a habit of breaking my guidelines. Even though this is my website, and I can run it any damn way I please, I feel like there needs to expectations in place for writers. If they see me breaking my guidelines then that could complicate my relationship with them.

This brings me to the update. I’m raising the maximum word count from 2,000 words to 4,000 words. I like 4,000 words because you can tell a nice complete story that won’t take all day to read. I don’t want readers coming to the site and feeling like they’re going to have to slog through work. That’s why I’ll reject anything that exceeds the new word count. I’ve got to abide by my own rules, yall.

Hopefully the new word count will open a door for storytellers to get work out there that they may’ve had trouble finding homes for.

That’s all for now. Yall have a good one.

  1. IMHO a short story should take as long to read as to sip a (maybe two) cups of coffee.

    1. Does sweet tea count because I don't drink coffee. ha!
